The Worst Church Social Media Trends
A few *assumed* best practices that are actually just nonsense.
Hey, it’s Brady,
Here are a few assumed social media best practices that are actually just nonsense.
#1. Hashtags
Instagram has said this plainly: hashtags do not boost discovery or visibility.
Their original purpose for hashtags was categorizing content. In the past decade though, algorithms have become smarter. They no longer need our hashtags to assist them.
Instead of relying on hashtags, focus on the copy (AKA, the words) in your caption and post.
#2. Ideal Post Timing
Does a sustainable posting schedule matter? Yes. For example, I schedule sermon reels for churches on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And I like to keep that schedule.
Does it matter though if I publish those reels at 9:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m.? Nope.
Just pick a schedule and stick with it. No need to obsess over the hour and minute.
#3. X Account
Churches regularly ask me if they should have a Twitter/X account. My answer for years has been simple:
The only churches I see excelling on X, are ministries with pastors who personally care about the platform.
If that’s not you? Feel free to skip it.
#4. Social Accounts For Ministries/Campuses
Another tricky one for churches to navigate. Here’s the simple rule of thumb:
Does this campus or ministry have its own worship service? If yes, then it might merit having its own accounts. So long as you can remain consistent with them.
