Hey, it’s Brady,
Every church skews toward one type of person.
Maybe yours trends older. Maybe families visit once and disappear. Maybe single young adults never stick around. Here's why - and how to fix it.
The language you use becomes the culture you build.
If you've never defined who you're trying to reach, you'll default to one voice. Usually whoever's been in charge the longest.
Simply put, there are 4 types of people in virtually every church's orbit:
#1: 'New' Nicole
New to faith. Life is chaotic - marriage is hard, kids are demanding, maybe she's trying to re-enter the workforce.
She needs: Direct communication with clear application points. No insider language.
#2: Cathy 'Christian'
Lifelong believer. Loves the familiar rhythms of church. But if she's honest? Scripture can feel stale sometimes.
She needs: Fresh stories of God's transformative power. Honesty over performance.
#3: 'Seeker' Sam
Open to faith, but apprehensive. He's been to church a few times. Even thought about baptism. But the examples in his own life don't inspire confidence.
He needs: Stability. A challenge. Something galvanizing.
#4: 'Far Away' Fiona
Spiritually curious, but closed off to Christianity. It's always felt too dogmatic. She's more drawn to Eastern practices.
She needs: Compassion. Space for questions. Zero elitism.
Most churches accidentally become a haven for one type of person - at the exclusion of everyone else.
It's not intentional. It just happens over time.
The fix? Define the people in your church's orbit - and communicate in a way that reaches all of them.
I’ve got a free template and tutorial on how to do this exercise and make it unique to your church. You can find that here.
Church Communications 101: The 7 Building Blocks
Sunday announcements drag. Too many events, too much competition for attention, ministries quietly fighting to be heard from the stage.
But the problem isn't effort - it's the lack of a system underneath.
This is The 7 Building Blocks, our summer blueprint for fixing church communications.
Get our blueprint here.
Thanks as always for your time, attention, and trust. Talk to you next Thursday. - Brady Shearer
